Freepik, originally founded as an image bank, has rebranded itself as Magnific following significant advancements in generative AI that threaten traditional image sourcing methods. The decision to change name comes after Freepik's acquisition of Magnific AI in 2024, which facilitates image upscaling through AI algorithms. The redesigned platform aims to align with evolving market demands, resulting in remarkable financial outcomes, including €200 million in recurring revenue and over one million subscriptions.
This strategic shift not only marks Freepik's commitment to integrating generative AI but also positions it to compete against major American tech firms without reliance on external funding, particularly from U.S. sources. By adopting a broad range of third-party AI models like Flux and Google’s Nano Banana Pro, Magnific aims to enhance its offerings while reducing dependency on foreign technology and fostering European innovation within the AI landscape.
