Wharton Study Highlights Risks of Cognitive Surrender in AI

A recent study from the Wharton School examines the phenomenon of "cognitive surrender" where users excessively rely on AI outputs with inadequate scrutiny. This research builds on Daniel Kahneman's framework of intuitive and deliberative thinking, introducing a third system, termed "system 3," which highlights cognitive processes occurring outside the user's own brain during AI interactions. Experimenting with 1,372 participants, the findings indicate that users frequently consulted AI for answers, regardless of accuracy, leading to potential cognitive pitfalls.
