Buffalo Site Develops 300MW Data Center Project

The owners of the former Tonawanda Coke Corporation plant in Buffalo, New York, have unveiled plans for a substantial data center development. This proposed project will encompass 300MW and a total of 500,000 square feet. Construction is expected to begin later this year, coinciding with ongoing environmental cleanup efforts at the site, with completion projected for late 2027. Developers Jon Williams and John Yensan are collaborating with an unnamed data center firm, with potential investment reaching up to $2 billion.
The strategic implications of this development are significant for the local economy and data infrastructure landscape. While the investment promises to boost technological capabilities in the area, it has faced opposition from environmental groups championing the site for renewable energy initiatives instead. The contrasting visions for the former coke manufacturing site underscore the ongoing debate about technological progress versus environmental sustainability in community planning, raising questions about local energy dependency and the role of data centers in future infrastructure.
