Meta Implements Employee Monitoring for AI Training

Meta has announced plans to implement an activity monitoring tool for its U.S. employees, aimed at enhancing the training of its AI agents. The tool, termed MCI (Mode Capability Initiative), will track mouse movements, clicks, keyboard strokes, and on-screen activity. This system is designed to collect real-world data to improve AI models' ability to emulate human-computer interactions, particularly in areas where AI struggles, such as navigating dropdown menus. According to internal notes, the gathered information will solely be used for AI training and not for employee performance evaluations.

The initiative, which expands the company's existing AI for Work program, may incite debate regarding employee surveillance and data governance, as companies increasingly leverage AI to automate tasks. Experts note that Meta's shift signifies a transition from automating individual tasks to replicating entire human workflows based on actual employee behavior. Such practices could lead to greater reliance on AI systems, pushing the boundaries of employee monitoring while raising critical questions about data privacy and compliance in the workplace.
