Meta Signs Deal for Space-Based Solar Power Potential

Meta has entered an agreement with Overview Energy to explore the potential of utilizing space-based solar energy. This project aims to harness up to one gigawatt of solar power through satellites capturing sunlight in low Earth orbit. The initiative is intended to support the heavy energy requirements of Meta’s AI data centers, taking advantage of constant sunlight and eliminating weather constraints. However, this innovative technology is still in the research phase, with no operational capabilities expected before 2030.

The partnership highlights Meta's significant investment in diverse energy solutions as it expands its AI infrastructure. Currently, Meta has heavily invested in natural gas and nuclear power to meet its energy needs. This venture into space-based solar power represents a strategic move to secure cleaner energy alternatives while potentially reducing long-term operational risks. However, the uncertainty surrounding the technology's development could also lead to dependency on foreign technological capabilities if those advancements do not materialize as planned.
