UK Council Delays Decision on 435MW Data Center Project

The Cherwell District Council in Oxfordshire has postponed its planning decision regarding a proposed 435MW data center campus located at Graven Hill, adjacent to the St David’s Army Barracks. The original timeline for permitting detailed blueprints was set for this month but has been extended to May 10, 2026, to allow further consideration. The envisaged facility would cover approximately 1.1 million square feet across eight buildings, demanding a significant energy supply with up to 290MW designated for IT equipment alone.
This delay may influence the region's data infrastructure and local economy, as the project is projected to generate between 600 to 800 jobs. While the developer intends to draw electricity from the main grid, the energy impact assessment suggests exploring alternative connections to local solar farms. This aligns with broader goals for sustainable energy sourcing in data operations, hence increasing the need for robust national compute capabilities and energy efficiency in the UK.
