Contec Launches Second Optical Ground Station in South Korea

Contec, a space service company, has inaugurated its second optical ground station in Jeju, South Korea, in collaboration with the French firm Cailabs. This installation is part of Contec's initiative to build an orbital compute supply chain, optimizing satellite data transmission through advanced laser technology. The new ground station leverages Cailabs’ atmospheric turbulence mitigation technology to ensure robust downlink capabilities from orbit, addressing significant challenges in satellite communication.
This new facility is strategic, marking progress in Contec's ambition to enhance its Ground Station-as-a-Service (GSaaS) network and lead in satellite quantum key distribution markets. The adoption of cutting-edge optical transmission technology not only boosts local operational capabilities but also reduces dependency on foreign technologies. As the production capacity is expected to ramp up, this development positions South Korea as a growing hub for optical satellite communications, promoting national technological independence.
