BSC Launches Spin-Off for Secure Chip Development

BARCELONA, Spain—The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) in collaboration with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) has launched a spin-off named Safe and Secure Technologies, which aims to design secure chip architectures specifically for critical infrastructure, targeting vital sectors such as power grids and telecommunications. This initiative comes in response to rising concerns about the dependence on foreign technology and seeks to enhance the technological sovereignty of the European Union.

The formation of Safe and Secure Technologies signifies a strategic shift in the European approach to semiconductor supply chains, focusing on domestic production that prioritizes security and audits. Through products like the "Safety Island," a monitoring module ensuring adherence to specifications, the spin-off aims to mitigate risks associated with foreign components. This initiative not only seeks to protect sensitive infrastructure but also marks a step towards greater national autonomy in technology development.
