Univity Secures $31M for 5G Satellite Demonstrators

Low Earth orbit satellite operator Univity has successfully closed a €27 million ($31.63 million) Series-A funding round. The funding, secured through investment groups including Blast.Club and the Deeptech 2030 Fund, is part of a national initiative to develop technologies that bolster France's telecommunications sovereignty. This financing will support the uniShape project, which aims to demonstrate 5G capabilities through two VLEO satellites, targeting commercial telecom operations in 2028.
The strategic implications of this investment are significant for Europe's telecommunications landscape. By developing VLEO technologies with state support, Univity aims to counter competitive threats from integrated systems like Starlink, promoting a model where telecom operators regain prominence in their value chains. This initiative not only addresses immediate technological needs but also positions Europe to enhance its sovereignty and reduce reliance on non-European entities for critical connectivity in the rapidly advancing telecommunications market.
