China Develops Microwave Energy System for Drones

Chinese scientists from Xidian University have developed an innovative system using microwave energy to sustain drone operations in flight. This research, published in Aeronautical Science & Technology, details how a ground-based microwave emitter can charge a drone equipped with antennas while both are in movement. The initial tests showed a capability to keep fixed-wing drones aloft for over three hours, heralding a strategic advancement in aerial drone deployment.

However, this technology raises concerns regarding operational efficiency, with the researchers estimating a mere 3-5% efficiency rate for energy transfer. While it could mean less battery weight and increased cargo capacity for drones—paralleling the function of an aircraft carrier on land—the current inefficiency limits its immediate application in military operations. Nonetheless, the research signals significant progress towards achieving longer flight durations for drones, aligning with evolving battlefield needs.
