Google Partners with Marvell for New AI Chips Development

Google is currently in discussions with Marvell Technology regarding the development of two new chips designed for more efficient execution of AI models. This potential deal includes a memory processing unit as an addition to Google’s existing Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) and a new TPU specifically aimed at optimizing AI workloads. The discussions were reported by The Information, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.
This partnership signifies a strategic shift for Google as it aims to enhance its TPU technology and position these chips as standalone cloud products. This move comes alongside Google's efforts to expand the reach of its AI hardware through collaborations with other cloud service providers and major clients, such as Anthropic, which plans to utilize Google’s TPUs for its Claude models. The diversification of suppliers may reduce reliance on existing partnerships like the one with Broadcom, enhancing Google's autonomy in AI infrastructure.
