Spain's Electric Car Chargers Face Operational Challenges

Spain’s network of electric vehicle chargers has expanded to over 55,000 operational units. However, a staggering 24% remain inactive due to various technical and administrative issues, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the existing infrastructure. Data from the Asociación Española de Fabricantes de Automóviles y Camiones (ANFAC) highlights this disconnect, revealing that more than 17,000 installed chargers are not operational, which means significant reliance on a system plagued by inefficiencies, including maintenance and connectivity problems.

This situation underscores critical implications for Spain's electric vehicle strategy, as many regions are facing disproportionately high rates of inactive chargers. Furthermore, the current distribution of charging points reflects a considerable gap in the availability of high-power chargers, which are essential for long-distance travel. As 69% of the existing network consists of slow chargers, the slow transition to fast charging options remains a significant barrier, ultimately impacting the larger goal of increasing electric vehicle adoption within the country.
