Spain's DGT Hits Record Fine Numbers in 2025

Spain's Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has announced a record-breaking 6,106,354 fines issued in 2025, marking the highest annual count since tracking began in 1961. This figure reflects a significant increase over recent years, with the number of fines rising sharply from over 5 million in 2022. The DGT attributes this spike largely to enhanced surveillance technologies, leading to an average of 16,730 daily fines, or one every 5.2 seconds.
The surge in fines correlates strongly with the DGT's investment in advanced monitoring technology, including mobile radar units and automated systems. This strategy has reportedly improved enforcement efficiency, resulting in a substantial collection of over €540 million in fines. However, concerns have been raised regarding a possible over-reliance on automated surveillance systems amidst staffing shortages in law enforcement, stirring debate over the effectiveness of these measures in genuinely improving road safety instead of merely increasing revenue.
