US Air Force Plans Data Centers at Alaska Bases

The US Department of the Air Force (DAF) has proposed the development of data centers at three of its sites in Alaska, specifically Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Eielson Air Force Base, and Clear Space Force Station. A Request for Lease Proposal has been issued to attract private sector partners, aiming to utilize approximately 4,700 acres of underused land for this project. The DAF highlights this initiative as a strategic effort to advance technological capabilities while generating economic opportunities. Selected developers will oversee financing, permitting, construction, and long-term operations of the facilities.

This development marks a significant shift in leveraging military land for civilian technology infrastructure, partly in response to increasing demands from the AI sector. By establishing data centers in Alaska, the Air Force is not only optimizing its real estate assets but also enhancing operational readiness. The integration of commercial data centers within military parameters could boost national AI autonomy, mitigating reliance on foreign technology, while supporting local economic initiatives and infrastructure development.
