Microsoft Expands GPU Capacity in Norway Data Center

Microsoft has expanded its partnership with Nscale to contract an additional 30,000 Nvidia Rubin GPUs for a new data center in Narvik, Norway. This agreement, announced on April 14, adds to the company's previous commitment of $6.2 billion for capacity signed in September 2025. The Narvik facility, housing a total capacity of 230MW, was previously linked to OpenAI's 'Stargate' location, which has since been abandoned due to regulatory and energy pricing challenges.
The expansion reflects a growing demand for advanced AI infrastructure in Europe, as Microsoft aims to support its customers with scalable technology by leveraging strategic locations. This new investment underscores the importance of local data center capabilities, enhancing national AI autonomy and potentially reducing dependency on foreign tech as the demand for AI workloads continues to surge. Microsoft’s pivot towards securing capacity aligns with its overall strategy to ensure availability in a competitive environment after facing delays in prior projects.
