CBP Proposes AI Surveillance Tower in San Clemente

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is proposing the installation of an Anduril Industries surveillance tower in San Clemente, California. The Sentry tower, part of the Autonomous Surveillance Tower (AST) program, is designed to monitor the coastline for migrant activity, but its placement 1.5 miles inland will allow it to surveil the city's 62,000 residents. Equipped with advanced computer vision technology, the system can autonomously detect and track objects deemed interesting without human oversight. Although CBP aims to limit its focus on marine activities, the system’s capability raises significant privacy concerns among residents.

Local citizens, alongside privacy advocacy group Oakland Privacy, are urging the community to resist the installation. They emphasize the rapid militarization of border surveillance sweeping north through California, as city officials express apprehension about the potential for invasive monitoring. CBP has rejected proposals to limit the tower's scanning capabilities in residential areas, citing operational requirements for border surveillance. As such, the system could unintentionally track individuals in neighborhoods, thereby exacerbating fears of privacy violations and increasing reliance on corporate surveillance technology.
