Google Plans Unified OS with Android 17 Launch

Google has announced plans for Android 17, which will introduce a transformative project unofficially named 'Aluminium OS'. The new system aims to consolidate their current mobile and desktop operating systems into a singular platform that provides an integrated experience across devices. Android 17 will first release its beta for developers by mid-2026, with a public beta expected during Google I/O, potentially rolling out its final version by summer 2026.
This strategic shift seeks to unify Google's resources by focusing development efforts on a single operating system instead of two. By moving towards a high-end market with potential premium hardware, Google intends to challenge existing laptop paradigms, transitioning Android from mobile-centric to a robust desktop solution. Should this ambition materialize, it could enhance national tech sovereignty while reducing reliance on other operating systems, yet raise questions on the overall dependency on the Google ecosystem.
