UK Government Allocates £500 Million for Sovereign AI

The UK government is initiating an £80 million procurement program for artificial intelligence projects, leveraging a broader £500 million sovereign capability fund aimed at enhancing national AI infrastructure. This initiative is intended to stimulate the market by validating new AI technologies and alleviating investment risks for tech firms, with the expectation that it will foster prototyping and collaboration between government and private sectors.

As part of this effort, contracts worth up to £5 million may be offered to various companies for projects that could last between 12 to 24 months, starting as early as July 2026. This approach not only supports domestic innovation but also strategically positions the government as a primary purchaser of AI solutions, ultimately aiming to expand the UK's autonomy in advanced AI capabilities and reduce dependency on foreign technologies.
