UK Launches Fast Grants for Systemic AI Safety Research

The UK government has announced a new funding initiative aimed at advancing systemic AI safety through the provision of grants for researchers. This program, launched in collaboration with the UKAI Safety Institute (AISI) and UK Research and Innovation, seeks to address the systemic risks associated with AI models and their operational environments. The initiative is expected to prioritize practical proposals that tackle significant systemic safety challenges, supporting around 20 exploratory or proof-of-concept grants initially, with prospects for more substantial research proposals in the future.
This funding program represents a strategic shift towards enhancing AI safety frameworks, focusing not only on the models but also on the larger systems that govern them. By fostering collaboration among researchers, civil society organizations, and the UK government, this initiative aims to cultivate a community of experts dedicated to mitigating systemic risks in AI. Ultimately, it aspires to strengthen the UK’s position in AI safety research, promoting national autonomy and reducing reliance on foreign expertise.
