OpenProject 17.2 Integrates MCP Server for AI Access

OpenProject has released version 17.2, introducing a significant new feature: the MCP Server, which provides project data access for AI systems. This server uses the Model Context Protocol, making OpenProject's APIv3 resources accessible as MCP-compatible endpoints. Initial tools include entities like Projects, Work Packages, and Users, although write access to project data is not supported in this version. Additionally, the update includes reusable meeting templates, new budget widgets, and five security fixes, enhancing overall usability for project management.

The introduction of the MCP Server marks a strategic shift in project management software, allowing advanced AI capabilities like analyzing project dependencies or summarizing project status. Supported by Mercedes-AMG, which actively uses the MCP server in its OpenProject environment, this development promotes greater integration between AI systems and project management tools, signaling a move towards enhanced AI utility in organizational workflows. This feature supports secure OAuth2 authentications and is expected to improve the management autonomy of enterprises using OpenProject.
