Niantic Leverages Pokémon Go for Delivery Robot Navigation

Niantic Spatial has partnered with Coco Robotics to develop a new visual positioning system, utilizing 30 billion images from Pokémon Go to achieve centimeter-level accuracy. This technology aims to enhance the navigation of delivery robots deployed in urban areas like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Helsinki, correcting the limitations of GPS, particularly for the 'last meter' delivery challenge.
By integrating this advanced positioning system into about 1,000 robots, the initiative aims to facilitate smoother and more precise delivery operations. This advancement not only improves delivery efficiency but also signifies a strategic shift towards less reliance on traditional GPS for urban logistics, showing a move towards greater autonomy in robotic delivery systems.
