New Consortium Aims for Digital Sovereignty Without Google

A newly formed industrial consortium, led by Germany's Volla Systeme GmbH, is developing a secure payment method for Android smartphones that does not rely on Google services. This initiative intends to create an open-source alternative to Google Play Integrity, a proprietary interface that currently regulates app operations on devices with Google Play services. Members of the consortium include partners from Germany, France, and Switzerland, aiming to address existing barriers for secure transactions on customized Android systems, primarily based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
The consortium's initiative, named "UnifiedAttestation," seeks to establish a trusted and transparent security verification method for developers and app publishers. This development is poised to eliminate the last obstacles preventing the adoption of alternative mobile operating systems. According to Dr. Jörg Wurzer of Volla Systeme, this effort aims to enhance digital sovereignty by moving away from the control imposed by a single US corporation, thereby positively impacting the landscape of mobile payments and app distributions in Europe.
