Korea Targets Sovereign AI Development Amid China Challenge
South Korea has been positioned to bridge its artificial intelligence (AI) technology gap with China over the next five years, as discussed by Shin Jin-woo, a prominent professor at KAIST. He emphasized that the real challenge lies not in matching performance benchmarks but in establishing a robust AI ecosystem. While Korean models have shown promising performance, the swift deployment and iterative cycle of Chinese models present a significant competitive edge. He noted that the gap in technology absorption is exaggerated and can be closed more quickly due to the open-source nature of many Chinese models.
Strategically, Shin advocates for a balanced approach towards the development of sovereign AI in South Korea. As the government pushes forward with initiatives aimed at creating domestically independent foundation models, the integration of open-source resources must be carefully managed. This dual approach not only fosters national AI autonomy but also mitigates risks associated with dependency on foreign platforms, particularly amidst shifting access conditions. Ultimately, state involvement is crucial as the capital-intensive nature of AI development necessitates financial backing beyond what the private sector can provide alone.
