FRV Invests €2.8B in AI Data Center in Mérida

Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), a subsidiary of Jameel Energy, has announced the development of a €2.8 billion ($3.2 billion) data center campus in Mérida, Spain. Dubbed the Lusitanus project, this facility will concentrate on artificial intelligence and will be predominantly powered by renewable energy sources, with over 80% of its energy self-generated from renewable resources. FRV has secured a land reservation for 240,000 square meters to establish this infrastructure, which signals a significant commitment to enhancing AI capabilities in the region.
The strategic implications of FRV's investment extend beyond mere infrastructure development. This initiative marks a robust shift toward sustainable AI operations in Spain, underscoring the importance of renewable energy in modern technological frameworks. By emphasizing energy efficiency and sustainable practices, Spain positions itself to enhance its national AI capabilities while reducing dependency on foreign power sources. The project not only contributes to local economic growth but also aligns with broader national efforts toward data sovereignty and autonomous technology development.
