Pentagon Urges Europe to Lead Ukraine Military Support

The Pentagon's top policy official, Elbridge Colby, has warned that future military support for Ukraine can no longer rely on the United States. This shift in approach was articulated during the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in Berlin, emphasizing that U.S. support had heavily depended on depleting U.S. stockpiles, which is no longer tenable. Colby stressed the necessity for European allies to assume primary responsibility for their defense and that future assistance to Ukraine should not rely significantly on U.S. contributions.
Colby's remarks come amid a backdrop where U.S. military aid to Ukraine has significantly diminished, falling by 99% in 2025, while European nations have increased their aid to Kyiv sharply. This highlights a critical rebalancing of military support towards Europe, stimulating a need for a more robust European defense industrial base and funding. As European nations ramp up military contributions, including advanced air defense systems and drones, the urgency for Ukraine to address its existing defense gaps remains paramount, illustrating the strategic shift in responsibility toward European autonomy in military support.
