Cisco Unveils Universal Quantum Switch Prototype

Cisco has introduced the Universal Quantum Switch, a functional research prototype designed for interconnecting quantum computers. This device can convert and transmit different coded information from heterogeneous quantum systems, addressing a crucial hurdle in quantum computing—scalability beyond individual, limited quantum systems. Demonstrations show its capabilities in a proof of concept, showcasing effective signal routing without altering quantum states.
The Universal Quantum Switch operates at room temperature, utilizing existing optical fibers to establish a coherent quantum network. Its integrated conversion engine facilitates signal transformation irrespective of factors like polarization or frequency. With up to 4% power loss and sub-nanosecond switching times, the switch maintains entanglement quality, validating polarization encoding while future enhancements are planned. This development not only accelerates advancements in quantum computing but also reinforces national interests in quantum technology autonomy.
