European Commission Allocates €180M for Sovereign Cloud

The European Commission has awarded €180 million to four service providers in its Cloud III DPS framework, aimed at delivering secure cloud computing services to EU institutions over the next six years. Selected companies include Post Telecom, OvhCloud, CleverCloud, Proximus, S3NS, Mistral, and Clarence, all evaluated based on a Cloud Security Framework introduced in October 2025. They needed to achieve a minimum sovereignty score of two out of four, with most partners surpassing three out of four.

This investment represents a significant step towards enhancing data sovereignty within the EU by contracting local providers and establishing standards that minimize reliance on foreign entities. The selection criteria and evaluation process underscore the EU's commitment to ensuring independence and security in cloud services, potentially mitigating the risks linked to extraterritorial laws from non-European countries. This move may also shape future cloud policy discussions, particularly regarding certification standards and sovereign data governance in Europe.
