Maharashtra Unveils $1.2B AI Policy for Skill Development

The Maharashtra cabinet has unveiled the Artificial Intelligence Policy 2026, which allocates ₹10,000 crore (approximately $1.2 billion) for the development of AI infrastructure and aims to create 150,000 job opportunities. The policy includes the establishment of six AI Excellence Centres, five AI Innovation Cities, and the provision of 2,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to bolster India's computational capacity. Additionally, the initiative seeks to train 200,000 youth in AI technologies to align workforce skills with market demands.

Strategically, this policy represents a significant investment in building a robust AI ecosystem within Maharashtra, promoting local startups through ₹500 crore in venture capital. It aims to lessen reliance on foreign technology by enhancing domestic capabilities and encouraging the adoption of AI across industries. By instituting an ethical AI framework and providing various incentives, including tariff reductions for AI adoption, the state seeks to position itself as a leader in responsible AI deployment, thus increasing national autonomy in the AI sector.
