Meta Secures Space Solar Power for AI Data Centres

Meta Platforms has announced a landmark partnership with Overview Energy to harness solar energy collected in space, aimed at powering its AI data centres. The agreement includes capacity reservations of up to 1 gigawatt of solar energy, which will support Meta’s operational demands as it pivots to renewable energy. Overview Energy plans to test its technology with an initial orbital demonstration scheduled for 2028, allowing for energy collection in geosynchronous orbit. This innovation promises to maximize energy production by ensuring continuous electricity supply, overcoming the limitations of ground-based solar facilities, which only generate power during daylight hours.
The strategic implications of this partnership signal a significant shift towards sustainable and reliable energy for AI infrastructure. With solar facilities being capable of operating at full capacity around the clock, this approach not only enhances Meta's energy efficiency but also showcases a scalable solution for other tech giants. The collaboration with Noon Energy for long-duration storage of up to 1 GWh further emphasizes the need for reliable energy sources that can sustain power needs over extended periods. By leveraging established solar infrastructure and innovative energy storage solutions, Meta aims to bolster its autonomy in powering AI data centres, while reducing dependency on conventional energy grids.
