BT and Nscale Boost UK Sovereign AI Infrastructure

BT Group has announced a partnership with AI startup Nscale to develop up to 14 megawatts of sovereign AI data center capacity in the UK. This initiative uses Nvidia’s full stack infrastructure and aims to expand AI data center capabilities across three existing BT sites, enhancing connectivity and infrastructure for secure, UK-controlled AI services. The facilities are designed to meet data residency and security requirements while enabling organizations to run AI workloads locally.

This collaboration marks a significant advancement in the UK's sovereign AI capabilities, with BT unveiling its comprehensive sovereign services portfolio. CEO Jon James has noted that this development is crucial for the UK’s economic growth, with the potential to unlock £18 billion in productivity gains. By focusing on local infrastructure, the initiative aims to bolster digital sovereignty, reduce reliance on foreign technologies, and accelerate the adoption of AI in critical sectors such as healthcare, energy, and finance.
