India Shifts to Design-led Electronics Ecosystem

India is transitioning its electronics focus from large-scale manufacturing to design ownership, as underscored by the recent approval of ₹7,104 crore (~$765M) for the Electronic Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that integrating design thinking across sectors is crucial for building robust products and infrastructure. Industry experts argue that India's ambitions in electronics will only be realized when the products are conceived domestically, supported by independent design houses that enhance value addition and market demand.
