$20B Data Center Proposal Approved in Joliet's Planning

A $20 billion proposal for a data center near Chicago has received a favorable recommendation from the Joliet planning commission. This project, named the Joliet Technology Center, is set to feature 24 two-story buildings, each providing approximately 144,500 square feet of space. The development is planned to be executed in four phases and is expected to offer significant infrastructure, including its own six-acre substation and a total capacity of up to 1.8 gigawatts of electricity. This project stands out for its financial independence, as it will self-finance its utility needs without relying on local residential or small-business services.

The approval marks a significant strategic move in the region, likely to enhance local economic conditions substantially. With an estimated generation of $310 million in property taxes and $40 million in utility taxes over three decades, this project promises a total of $2.1 billion in local tax revenue, which could boost Joliet's infrastructure and public services.
