Madrid Advances with 1,500-Ton Tunnel Boring Machine

The new 1,500-ton tunnel boring machine named Mayrit is set to begin its operations, crucial for the expansion of Line 11 of Madrid's Metro system. This project, which aims to connect two poorly linked ends of the city, has seen Mayrit undergo final technical testing ahead of its launch scheduled for the end of March. The machine, built in Germany, measures 98 meters in length and will excavate 5,227 meters of tunnel, significantly improving transit times in the city by allowing trains to operate where infrastructure was previously inadequate.

The introduction of Mayrit marks a substantial shift in construction technology, with its capabilities of tunneling and simultaneously constructing the tunnel's walls set to revolutionize future urban transportation projects. Mayrit’s efficient design enables it to operate at approximately 15 meters per day, far surpassing traditional methods which only advance about 50 meters monthly. This mechanism not only enhances local commuting options but also reinforces Madrid's autonomy in implementing advanced construction technologies, reducing reliance on foreign equipment or expertise in large-scale infrastructure development.
