Japan Aims for $254B in Domestic Semiconductor Sales

The Japanese government has announced plans to achieve sales of 40 trillion yen (approximately $254 billion) in domestically produced semiconductors by the year 2040. This initiative aims to position Japan alongside the US and China in the global semiconductor market, driven by increasing demand from artificial intelligence and data center industries. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasized the need for Japan to solidify its presence in this critical sector during a meeting focused on the country’s growth strategy.

Strategically, this move could significantly enhance Japan's technological autonomy by fostering an independent semiconductor industry. With plans to grab a substantial share of the global market, Japan seeks to strengthen its AI infrastructure while bridging the existing gap with leading producers. This initiative may also reduce the country's reliance on foreign semiconductor imports, bolstering national security in technology-dependent sectors.
