A research team from Germany has utilized artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze over 3,000 signs carved by the Aurignacian culture on ivory, bone, and antlers, dating back 43,000 to 34,000 years. These signs display systematic features resembling the oldest known proto-cuneiform tablets from the Uruk V period (circa 3500-3350 BC). The analysis conducted by Eva Dutkiewicz from the Museum of Prehistory and Ancient History in Berlin and Christian Bentz from Saarland University involved statistical modeling applied to 260 paleolithic artifacts extracted from caves in the Swabian Jura, with findings published in the journal PNAS.

This discovery challenges existing understandings of early human communication, hinting that the Aurignacians possessed a sophisticated system of symbols. The study indicates a density of information in these signs comparable to the nascent proto-cuneiform systems. If validated, this could significantly alter the narrative of cognitive evolution, suggesting that complex information encoding capabilities arose much earlier than previously accepted, which may reshape our understanding of the origins of writing.
