Micron Expands AI Memory Production with New Taiwan Facility

Key Points

  • 1Micron plans second DRAM facility in Taiwan, boosting supply.
  • 2New site aims to meet increasing high-bandwidth memory demand.
  • 3Expansion enhances domestic chip production, reducing foreign dependency.

Micron Technology has announced plans to establish a second chip manufacturing facility at its newly acquired Tongluo site in Taiwan, following the acquisition from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. This facility aims to amplify the production of advanced DRAM products, specifically high-bandwidth memory (HBM), to cater to the growing demands of the AI sector. Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of fiscal 2026, mirroring the scale of its existing facility in Miaoli County.

The addition of this facility is set to enhance Micron's production capabilities in leading-edge DRAM technologies, crucial for AI applications. Strategically, this expansion not only supports Micron's growth trajectory amidst surging AI requirements but also reinforces Taiwan's position in global semiconductor manufacturing. By increasing domestic production of key memory technologies, this move reduces reliance on foreign suppliers and aligns with rising national interests in chip sovereignty.
