The U.S. unemployment rate edged up to 4.4% in February 2026, with a surprising loss of 92,000 jobs, contrasting sharply with analyst expectations of a 50,000 job gain. Analysts from Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported that AI was named as a contributing factor in 4,680 job cuts, which amounts to 10% of total layoffs for the month.
