UK Awards Solar Contracts Amid Conflict of Interest Concerns

The U.K. government has awarded contracts exceeding £70,000 to Amelio Enterprises for the installation of solar panels on schools, following a competitive procurement process led by Crown Commercial Services. The funding, part of a push by the government’s clean energy arm Great British Energy, aims to enhance energy efficiency in public buildings by utilizing a budget of £8.3 billion allocated for clean power projects. These initiatives underscore the government's commitment to the renewable energy sector under the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

Concerns have arisen regarding potential conflicts of interest, as the firm’s leadership includes the brother of a senior DESNZ official, Jeremy Pocklington. Although he declared this relationship and recused himself from decision-making related to Good Energy's contracts, the situation has prompted scrutiny about the integrity of the procurement process. The government asserts that the awarded contracts were in compliance with procurement rules, indicating a focus on transparency as it seeks to balance energy savings for public infrastructure while addressing critiques regarding governance and accountability.
