UK Invests £45M in AI Supercomputer for Fusion Research

The UK government has announced a £45 million investment in an AI-driven supercomputer, dubbed "Sunrise," aimed at aiding scientists in the modeling of nuclear fusion physics. Scheduled to commence operations in June at the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s Culham campus, this system is touted as the world’s most powerful AI supercomputer dedicated exclusively to fusion energy research. With a capacity of 6.76 exaFLOPS, Sunrise will integrate high-performance computing with AI-driven models, enabling detailed simulations that can replicate the complex dynamics of superheated plasma within reactors.

This substantial investment marks a strategic shift in the UK's approach to fusion energy research, establishing the Culham site as a central hub within the proposed "AI Growth Zone." By bolstering domestic AI capabilities focused on critical energy technologies, the UK positions itself to reduce reliance on foreign technologies and enhance its national research infrastructure.
