China Completes Key Railway Link to Mongolia

Key Points
- 1China and Mongolia finalize border railway project after delays.
- 2New railway enhances transportation of 50M tons of coal annually.
- 3Increases Mongolia's export capacity but deepens reliance on China.
China and Mongolia have been working on a logistical solution for transporting coal and metals from Mongolia to China for over a decade. The crucial phase of this project, a 19.5-kilometer border railway link at Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod, is scheduled for completion by 2027. Despite the strategic significance of this corridor, the project faces technical and geographical challenges, highlighted by China's rapid infrastructure development contrasted with Mongolia's slower progress on less than 20 kilometers of track.
The completion of this railway corridor is significant both environmentally and economically. With Mongolia's vast reserves of coal and copper, this railway will boost annual exports by over $1.5 billion, reaching a volume of 165 million tons. However, it will also strengthen Mongolia's dependence on China, as currently 90% of its mineral exports go to Chinese markets. This interdependence raises concerns about long-term economic sovereignty, especially given China's previous supply issues with Australian coal.
