AWS Plans $750M Data Center in Clinton, Mississippi

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is reportedly planning to invest $750 million in developing a data center in Clinton, Mississippi, following a quitclaim deed acquisition of 99 acres of land. The facility, to be located in the Clinton Industrial Park, previously housed Milwaukee Tool and is set for redevelopment. The Clinton Board of Aldermen has authorized a Fee-in-Lieu of Taxes agreement, although final approval from the Mississippi Development Authority remains pending. Mayor Will Purdie has addressed community concerns regarding environmental impact, clarifying that the center won’t utilize potable water for cooling and will be powered by the existing electrical grid.

This investment represents a significant economic development initiative for Clinton and Hinds County, promising millions in annual revenue for local budgets and schools. While AWS has not released specific details about the data center's size and power requirements, it is noted that the site encompasses 730,000 square feet. The strategic move aligns with AWS's broader plans in Mississippi, which also include a massive $10 billion data center project in Madison County, generating thousands of jobs and enhancing regional AI infrastructure. The project symbolizes a push for local economic resilience through technology without increasing reliance on foreign power sources or environmentally concerning practices.
