FRV Announces €2.8B AI Data Center in Mérida

Spanish firm Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) has announced plans to establish a €2.8 billion data center focused on artificial intelligence in Mérida, Extremadura. The initiative, known as the Lusitanus project, will invest approximately €2.1 billion in digital infrastructure and €700 million in renewable energy generation, aiming for over 80% renewable self-power capability. FRV has already secured contracts for 240,000 sqm land to facilitate the development.

This investment marks a significant commitment to enhancing Spain's digital capabilities while integrating renewable energy solutions. By focusing on AI and sustainable energy, the project not only aims to bolster local infrastructure but also reinforces Spain’s position in the global AI landscape, aligning with sovereign strategies for data sovereignty and autonomy in technology.
