PJM Announces 220GW New Grid Capacity Requests

PJM Interconnection has declared that 811 new generation projects totaling 220GW have applied to connect to the grid through a reformed interconnection process. This updated process shifts from a first-come, first-served model to a first-ready approach, emphasizing projects that demonstrate financial viability and site control before entering the connection queue. The aim is to mitigate speculative projects, enhance predictability, and accelerate the overall interconnection pace. Interim President and CEO David Mills noted the increased interest from developers, indicating strong market signals and a commitment to expedite viable projects.

The introduction of HyperQ, an AI-enabled tool by Google-backed Tapestry, is central to the new application process. This system analyzes and processes applications collectively, producing detailed reports to assist grid planners in identifying deficiencies. By improving the efficiency of application reviews, HyperQ aims to bolster grid capacity swiftly in response to diverse energy generation projects, including innovative technologies like small nuclear reactors and fusion. The integration of AI not only optimizes resource allocation but also strengthens PJM’s capacity to respond to energy demands effectively.
