  • 2Developing responsible AI policies for public services and safety.
  • 3Increases state autonomy in AI development and regulation.

On Thursday, Karnataka formed a high-level committee to oversee the deployment of artificial intelligence in government systems and public services, led by Infosys cofounder Kris Gopalakrishnan. The committee includes industry leaders from Accenture, IBM, and Wipro, with a focus on establishing responsible AI practices that promote safety, fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI implementations across various sectors. This initiative aims to position Karnataka as a leader in developing a comprehensive framework for responsible AI use within India.

The committee is tasked with crafting a roadmap for responsible AI integration that addresses potential risks, including social scoring and high-stakes automated decisions lacking human oversight. Within 90 days, the panel is expected to deliver a report outlining a risk classification system and implementation strategies. This strategic move is aimed at enhancing the state's innovation environment while ensuring ethical considerations in AI applications, ultimately reinforcing Karnataka's autonomy in tech governance.
